A damp mark is evidence of moisture, not a diagnosis. Rain may enter through a crack, travel through porous masonry, collect because a drain is blocked, or condense on a cold surface when indoor air is humid.
The correct repair depends on that distinction.
Before applying anything, inspect the area during or after wet weather if possible, trace the stain beyond its visible edge, and look for failed sealant, open joints, blocked outlets, and plumbing nearby. Covering the discolouration can hide the symptom while leaving the water path untouched, which often leads to peeling finishes and repeated repairs.
