Lighting Up Historic Buildings

Historic buildings have an appeal all their own. From castles to cathedrals, these ancient structures draw people in by their unique design, unique stories, and incredible beauty. However, to ensure that these buildings remain attractive and well-maintained for generations to come, careful consideration must be taken when it comes to lighting.

The selection of lighting for historic buildings is no small task as it must be done with both practicality and preservation in mind. For instance, certain luminaires may be too large or industrial-looking for the delicate architecture of an old building; while on the other hand too much light may damage the building’s delicate materials over time.

Fortunately, there are several ways modern lighting can be used tastefully in historic buildings without compromising their character and integrity:

  • LED technology helps reduce energy consumption while providing a softer illumination than traditional fixtures;
  • Spotlights can highlight specific elements such as a stained glass window or architectural feature;
  • Decorative wall sconces can add a touch of classic elegance to any room;
  • Motion sensors help conserve energy by turning lights off when not needed
